239 | Dr. Hugh Jameson, Professor of History, ended 35 years at Northern when he retired in August, 1965. Dr. Jameson received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. He came to NIU in 1930 after teaching at Mankato State Teachers College, Minnesota, and the University of Michigan. He served as chairman of the Department of Social Science for 18 years from 1941 to 1958. In January, 1961, the Eta Eta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary, established the Hugh Jameson History Prize in recognition of his distinguished services in the fields of history and the social sciences. Perhaps he will be best remembered by many thousands of Northern graduates as the grand marshal of commencement, a position he held for 30 years.
