" Fish, John, Farmer; Sec 18; P.O. Mt. Carroll; born in Cortland Co. NY; April 12, 1814; Lived in NY PA and Canada and Mich and came to Carroll Co Il in 1839 by stage and on foot he was one of the early settlers here, and there are only a few now living that were here when he came; he engaged in wood and lumber on the river; bought a claim and entered land from the government; in 1849 crossed the plains to California and engaged in mining; returned to Illinois in abt 1852; has crossed the plains three times; he also went to Idaho; returning from California, he and E. Jacobs and eight others bought a Bungo ( which is, I think some kind of a boat) as the story goes that he and his friends went to Lake Nicarauga in Central America. While trying to cross they encountered a terrible storm that nearly did them all in. He was known as a great hunter and an excellent shot.

Married Miss Jane Armitage, of Chicago, in Nov. 1852; they have two children Mary Ann and Ella; lost one son Elmer Ellsworth" [1]
