- Enlisted for three months 5th Mass. Inf., was in the first Battle of Bull Run, 21 Jul 1861. When mustered out he went home and in 1862 raised a company in Chelsea, MA., which became Co. G, 40th Mass. Inf. Made First Lieutenant, later promoted to Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel of this regiment. Taken prisoner 16 May 1864 at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, held at Libby, Macon, Charleston and Columbia. Escaped Columbia Dec 1864, picked up by federal gunboat and returned to seat of war as Lieutenant Colonel 4th Mass. Cav. 6 Apr 1865 was wounded and taken prisoner at High Bridge, VA, released the next day. Given special brevet as Colonel, later breveted as Brigadier General. Following the war he was Military Governor of Florida.
