There is some confusion concerning Revolutionary War service for John Temple (1759-1833). His name does not appear in the typical listings of Revolutionary war soldiers,[1] nor have any obvious records for him been found in the National Archives (NARA).

However, there did appear an inquiry of December 7, 2001 in the Genealogy.com forum here by a Craig H. Trout of Louden Co., VA (craigtrout@aol.com), who is a descendant of Nathan Temple (1747-1842), a brother to this John Temple. He states:

"Militia muster rolls indicate that my Nathaniel TEMPLE (1747 -1842) and his brother John TEMPLE (both of Hopewell) served as privates in Captain John HUNT's Company of Militia, First Regiment, Hunterdon County, NJ sometime during the time frame of June 1776 to May 1777.

Information from the Benjamin Temple House Museum reports that Benjamin TEMPLE, their uncle, fought along with them at the Battle of Trenton (1st Trenton was 25 Dec 1776, 2nd Trenton was later that week).

My Nathaniel TEMPLE later served as a 2nd Lt. in Captain John MOTT's Company, 1st Regiment from May to September in 1777.

Can anyone recommend a source for detailed information regarding the Hunterdon County Militia during the Revolution in general, and the role of Captain HUNT's and Captain MOTT's companies of militia in particular?",

Nathaniel Temple's service in Mott's Company and the service of Benjamin Temple seem to be independently documented. However the service for both Nathaniel and John Temple in John Hunt's Company does not. Perhaps information from the Benjamin Temple House Museum would shed more light.

Possible sources for further information:

"Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War", complied by William S. Stryker, Adjt. Gen., Trenton 1872.

"Index of the Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War" published 1941 by N.J. State Planning Board. These are generally available in large genealogical libraries and are easy to use.
